The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) that the government has fully settled all arrears owed to the pension fund. Dr.
Forson made this statement during the official inauguration of the board in Accra. He emphasized the government’s commitment to a robust and sustainable pension system. “I want to assure you that the government is current on all payments due to SSNIT.
We are determined to continue honoring these obligations to safeguard the pensions of Ghanaian workers,” he said. The Director-General of SSNIT, Kwesi Afreh Biney, confirmed Dr. Forson’s statement.
Government assures SSNIT arrears settlement
He disclosed that the government has not only cleared inherited arrears but is also up to date on all current statutory contributions. This assurance comes at a time when there is high public interest in the management of pension funds.
There have been widespread calls for greater transparency and accountability in SSNIT’s investment portfolio and governance structures. Dr. Forson’s remarks are expected to boost public confidence in SSNIT’s financial standing.
They also reaffirm the government’s commitment to protecting the retirement benefits of workers across the country. The newly formed SSNIT Board is chaired by Nana Ansah Sasraku III. It includes representatives from the government, organized labor, and employer groups.
The board has a mandate to provide strategic oversight and ensure sound corporate governance of the Fund. The Minister’s assurance and the new board’s commitment are seen as important steps toward ensuring the sustainability and reliability of Ghana’s pension system.
