SSA announces digital access for ssns

by / ⠀News / May 1, 2025

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a new feature that will allow account holders to view their Social Security number (SSN) online securely. This update is expected to be available by early summer and will provide a convenient alternative for those who have lost or misplaced their physical Social Security card. According to the SSA, this digital solution will streamline the process for individuals who need access to their SSN, reducing the need for in-person visits or waiting for a replacement card to arrive by mail.

The agency emphasizes that this feature will enhance user experience while ensuring the protection of sensitive information. Acting SSA Commissioner Lee Dudek stated, “We are proud to offer this new digital solution to our account holders. This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner.”

Digital access to SSNs unveiled

The SSA reports that approximately 71.6 million Americans received support from programs administered by the agency in 2023, highlighting the widespread impact of this new online feature. The agency encourages all account holders to take advantage of this secure digital access to their SSNs once it becomes available.

Until the digital version is launched, individuals who have lost or had their Social Security card stolen can request a replacement online or by phone at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. The new card should arrive by mail within a few business days after you submit the request. The SSA assures that the My Social Security platform, where the digital Social Security cards will be accessible, is secure and focused on safeguarding personal identifiable information.

The agency believes this initiative will reduce the risks associated with lost or stolen physical cards while providing a more efficient service to the public.
