Immigration law can be a particularly controversial practice since each case’s outcome determines whether or not someone gets to enter a country, potentially reshaping their entire livelihood.
It stands to reason that such an important decision would be handled with care, but as attorney Sharif Silmi discovered in 2017 while working at a big-firm immigration practice, this wasn’t the case. He witnessed professionals who were more than qualified for an EB-1A petition being denied time and time again, not because they failed to meet the criteria but because their cases were handled like products on an assembly line.
Commenting on the severity of the issue, Silmi stated, “I realized we were treating extraordinary people like ordinary paperwork. Volume was everything, but nobody was taking time to understand what made each case special.”
Recognizing the need for substantial change in immigration law, Silmi started his own practice: Silmi Law. Instead of taking on many cases and treating them all the same, his team would accept fewer cases, invest more time in strategy, and involve senior attorneys on every petition. In time, this approach led Silmi Law to obtain internal approval rates of over 90% for EB-1A and NIW cases.
Self-Petition Cases as Storytelling
Silmi developed Silmi Law to oppose what he calls the “conveyor belt model,” a high-volume method of processing that lacks customizability commonly found in use at most immigration firms.
“The thing about self-petition cases is they’re all about storytelling,” Silmi said. “You’re not just filling out forms; you’re arguing why someone’s achievements matter to America. That takes time and real strategic thinking.”
In response to these practices, Silmi Law specializes in what Silmi calls “evidence narratives,” or cases that connect technical capabilities to real-world applications. The firm emphasizes how each client’s work influences their field rather than merely listing their achievements.
A Strong Focus on Non-Academic EB-1A Cases
Many immigration firms issue guidance assuming that their EB-1A cases have university connections, and while that’s sometimes true, it isn’t always the case. Silmi Law uses these assumptions to stand out in the industry, focusing instead on tech professionals and other individuals with entrepreneurial and corporate achievements.
A product manager who’s influenced industry standards faces different evidence challenges than a research scientist,” Silmi noted. “We’ve learned how to translate business impact into language USCIS actually understands.”
Instead of professors and other academic personnel, Silmi Law’s clients include software architects, cybersecurity experts, startup founders, and other professionals whose extraordinary capabilities aren’t necessarily academic.
Providing an Educational Approach to Consultation
To help clients better understand complex immigration concepts, Silmi Law created a YouTube channel featuring videos like NIW Myths Busted and EB-1A Evidence Strategy for Engineers. This educational approach to client interaction reflects the firm’s belief that developing informed clients creates stronger cases.
By sharing insights usually reserved for paid consultations, the firm builds trust and establishes itself as a thought leader in immigration strategy.
This push for improved access to information has led Silmi Law to announce an upcoming influx of digital content designed to help skilled immigrants better comprehend complex visa categories before they file. The expansion includes a variety of media formats, including case study breakdowns, downloadable guides, and weekly livestreams, all of which help position the firm as one that combines legal representation with large-scale education.
Educational movements like Silmi Law’s are now more critical than ever, as USCIS data shows increasing scrutiny across self-petition categories, necessitating proper preparation.
“We kept seeing the same mistakes repeatedly,” Silmi shared. “People would come to us after denials elsewhere, usually because their first attorney didn’t know how to position their achievements strategically.”
Recognizing Avenues for Continued Growth
Silmi Law now occupies a position to serve a growing market, as immigration patterns are shifting toward skilled professionals in emerging fields, particularly in technology sectors. Studies suggest demand for extraordinary ability and national interest petitions will rise in the coming years, making Silmi Law’s unique value proposition all the more valuable.
Although the firm plans to maintain its status as a boutique operation, it remains committed to helping people understand their legal options through their educational media. Silmi Law continues to expand its content library while maintaining its dedication to providing the personalized services that garner testimonials like “Guru of Green Card!” from appreciative clientele.
