Finding Hobbies that Fit How You Feel

by / ⠀Featured / January 28, 2026

January is National Hobby Month, a time when people often focus on trying something new. But for many, the pressure to keep up with the new year, new goals, and new routines can be exhausting.

Instead of searching for a brand-new hobby, this month can be an opportunity to connect with something familiar.  Something that used to bring comfort and creativity before life got busy.

They don’t need to be impressive or look the same as they used to. Getting back into a hobby may mean showing up for a few minutes in a way that feels manageable.

Before choosing a hobby, it can be helpful to ask yourself the question: What do I have the capacity for today? From day to day, the answer may change, and that’s okay. Let your feelings guide you through the process.

No Need to Be Perfect

Hobbies don’t need to meet any standards or follow strict schedules. You don’t need to do them every day. You don’t need to be “good” at them. And you don’t need long stretches of time for them to count.

Even 10-20 minutes can be meaningful.

Choose your hobby based on how you feel. Some days may call for movement. Other days call for rest. Recent lifestyle conversations show that low-energy hobbies can be as fulfilling as other hobbies. A few ideas include:

  • Low energy days: journaling, stretching, coloring, or listening to a new music album
  • When anxiety is high: short walks, simple crafts, or mindfulness practices
  • When you’re mentally tired: reading, reflecting, or switching tasks can offer a reset
  • High energy days: cooking something simple, movement, or spending time outdoors

For many people, the value of hobbies is not about how much gets done, but about how supported they feel while doing them.

“Hobbies are meant to support well-being, not add another expectation. When energy is limited, meeting yourself where you are can make a difference,” said Dr. Heath Canfield, DO, psychiatrist at Serenity Mental Health Centers.

Hobbies do not have to look the same as they once did. What fit in your life months or years ago may not fit into your life now. Interests and hobbies evolve based on the different seasons of life and how much we can give at the time.

If we cannot give it our all one day, it’s okay to rest. Rest is not a failure. It’s necessary,

“If your hobby for the day looks like slowing down, stretching, or doing nothing at all, that still counts. Hobbies are meant to support well-being, not add another expectation,” said Dr. Canfield.

When Additional Support is Needed

Sometimes burnout or stress makes it difficult to enjoy things that once felt easy. If rest feels like the only option day after day, additional support may be helpful.

Serenity Mental Health Centers supports patients in rebuilding motivation, setting realistic goals, and reconnecting with the parts of life, including hobbies, that matter to them.

“Rebuilding motivation doesn’t happen all at once. Support can help people take manageable steps toward reconnecting with the parts of life that bring meaning and balance,” said Dr. Canfield.

Serenity offers evidence-based treatment options such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), ketamine infusion therapy, and medication management, all designed to support long-term progress and personal goals.

Reconnecting with a hobby doesn’t have to happen all at once. Healing rarely does.
