The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). The new deadline is now September 15, 2025, instead of the initial date of July 31, 2025. This decision aims to provide relief to taxpayers, especially salaried employees, by giving them additional time to file their returns.

Deadline extension to September 15
The extension is expected to ease the pressure on both tax filers and the Income Tax Department. Tax experts have welcomed the move, stating that the extra time will help individuals and businesses ensure the accuracy of their tax filings and comply with any new regulations or changes in the tax code.
Taxpayers are advised to stay informed through official communications from the Income Tax Department for updates and further details.
The ITR forms for filing for FY 2024-25 will not be available until June, as the deadline has been extended to September 15.
The Finance Bill has been passed and received assent from the President; however, it has been more than 365 days since then.
