National Dog Day is the perfect time to celebrate our furry friends and consider adding a new companion to the family. A recent survey by Rover, an online pet care market, reveals the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. and their common personality traits. According to the survey, the top five most popular breeds are non-designer mixed breeds, Labrador Retrievers, Goldendoodles, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds.
French Bulldogs also make the list. While breed can provide clues about a dog’s personality, it’s important to remember that each dog is unique. Phil Tedeschi, a professor at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work, emphasizes getting to know the individual dog rather than relying solely on breed stereotypes.
Common personality traits people and their dogs share include playfulness, intelligence, and friendliness. However, separation anxiety is a challenge for many dogs, with around 42% of owners reporting it as an issue. Breeds like Yorkshire Terriers are more prone to separation anxiety, but any dog can experience it when apart from their owners. Investing in a grass pad for dogs can help alleviate stress by giving them a designated space for bathroom needs indoors. Incorporating consistent routines and positive reinforcement can further support their emotional well-being.
The survey also highlights the most loyal dog breeds, such as American Pit Bull Terriers and German Shepherds. German Shepherds are active and require lots of engagement, while Pit Bulls often face stigma and restrictions despite their high energy levels.
