In May 2025, millions of Americans who receive Social Security benefits will see an unusual occurrence in their payment schedule. Some recipients will receive two checks this month, resulting in no payment being issued in June. The Social Security Administration distributes payments to approximately 69 million people each month, including retirees and those with qualifying disabilities.
Additionally, individuals with limited income or resources who are 65 or older, blind, or have a disability receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. About half of SSI recipients also receive Social Security payments. The regular Social Security payment schedule for May 2025 is as follows:
Friday, May 2: Recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997
Wednesday, May 14: Individuals with birthdates between the 1st and 10th
Wednesday, May 21: Those with birthdates between the 11th and 20th
Wednesday, May 28: People with birthdates between the 21st and 31st
However, SSI recipients will receive two checks in May.
The first payment, scheduled for May 1, is the regular monthly benefit for May 2025. The second check, set to arrive on May 30, is the June payment. This early issuance is due to June 1 falling on a Sunday.
SSI provides monthly benefits to those with limited income or resources who meet the age or disability criteria. Children with a qualifying disability can also receive SSI. The application process can be started online, in person at local Social Security offices, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) during regular business hours.
