Social Security recipients to receive two checks in May

by / ⠀News / May 28, 2025

In May 2025, millions of Americans who receive Social Security benefits will see an unusual occurrence in their payment schedule. Some recipients will receive two checks this month, resulting in no payment being issued in June. The Social Security Administration distributes payments to approximately 69 million people each month, including retirees and those with qualifying disabilities.

Additionally, individuals with limited income or resources who are 65 or older, blind, or have a disability receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. About half of SSI recipients also receive Social Security payments. The regular Social Security payment schedule for May 2025 is as follows:

Friday, May 2: Recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997
Wednesday, May 14: Individuals with birthdates between the 1st and 10th
Wednesday, May 21: Those with birthdates between the 11th and 20th
Wednesday, May 28: People with birthdates between the 21st and 31st

However, SSI recipients will receive two checks in May.

The first payment, scheduled for May 1, is the regular monthly benefit for May 2025. The second check, set to arrive on May 30, is the June payment. This early issuance is due to June 1 falling on a Sunday.

SSI provides monthly benefits to those with limited income or resources who meet the age or disability criteria. Children with a qualifying disability can also receive SSI. The application process can be started online, in person at local Social Security offices, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) during regular business hours.

If your scheduled payment date passes without receiving your benefits, the Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional mailing days before contacting them. Most payments arrive on time, with 99% of beneficiaries receiving their funds electronically.

Vermont has three Social Security offices located in Burlington, Montpelier, and Rutland, as well as three Remote Hearing Sites and one Disability Determination Service. Individuals can start collecting reduced Social Security benefits as early as age 62. However, waiting until full retirement age results in a larger monthly payment.

The full retirement age varies based on birth year, with those born between May 2, 1958, and February 28, 1959, reaching full retirement age in 2025. For people born in 1960 or later, the full retirement age is 67.
