Architecting for Scale: Building AI-Driven Platforms That Serve Millions

by / ⠀News / November 22, 2024

Technology impacts nearly every aspect of life. The ability to design systems that serve millions is no luxury, it’s a necessity. Sumit Ranjan is a machine learning engineer and software architect who has mastered the art of building AI-driven platforms for users on a global scale. Through his work with companies like PayPal and Adobe, Ranjan has developed systems that handle immense amounts of data and deliver personalized user interaction.

Organizations seeking to serve millions of users face the monumental challenge of scaling AI-driven systems to process data. Additionally, they must maintain a high-quality user experience. AI must be nimble enough to perform tasks ranging from suggesting the perfect product to curating personalized offers. Potential problems include system slowdowns and data bottlenecks.

These issues become more complex as user expectations rise. Today’s customers expect platforms to adapt to their behavior in real time. How can this be done effectively? The solution is architecting scalable systems with machine learning. That’s a task Ranjan tackles head-on.

Ranjan was the lead architect behind PayPal’s Personalization Platform. This platform is integral to PayPal’s customer engagement strategy. Ranjan leveraged machine learning to provide users with everything from tailored content to dynamic offers. The company has managed to give its global user base customized experiences.

This was no small feat. An AI-powered platform must handle the scale and diversity of PayPal’s users. Designing this platform required technical expertise and knowledge of how machine-learning models interact with real-time data. However, Ranjan rose to the occasion by developing a solution that made every interaction feel personal for millions of customers.

“I have been passionate about building meaningful products and services that solve real-world problems of customers and improve their lives,” he says. Ranjan’s ability to do this garnered him several honors. Between 2014 and 2019, he received the PayPal Critical Talent Award and PayPal Top Achiever Award and was promoted to Senior MTS Architect.

Ranjan then moved to Adobe. Now, he’s a lead architect for Machine Learning and Experimentation. In this role, he develops AI systems that serve a broad range of global brands through Adobe’s Experience Cloud. His work empowers brands to offer personalized experiences at scale. Again, Ranjan was cited for excellence in his profession when he received the performance-based Spot Award at Adobe in 2023.

“I am a problem solver, builder, and a self-motivated engineer by heart,” Ranjan says. Those qualities and his ability to balance performance with efficiency have contributed to his success. The Georgia Tech graduate optimizes data and software architecture enabling these systems to perform under immense pressure.

“I am fascinated by how AI/ML can revolutionize industries and enhance user interactions in ways we’ve never seen before,” Ranjan reveals. This interest helps set him apart from many of his peers. For instance, maintaining AI platforms over the long haul is difficult. However, Ranjan has been able to design powerful, flexible, and responsive solutions that businesses can sustain over the long term.

Ranjan envisions new possibilities for the future. “I see myself continuing to push the boundaries of AI and machine learning applications in enterprise environments,” he shares. He also aspires to mentor the next generation of technology leaders in AI/ML by sharing his unique experiences and insights.
