"Underage Sales Violations"

Two local businesses in Baldwin, Georgia, Alto Mountain Grocery and Los Cerritos Mexican Restaurant, were both cited for illegal underage sales of alcohol and tobacco on April 23, 2024. The establishments may face further actions from the County Sherrif’s Office if they continue to disobey county and state laws.

The authorities’ spokesperson, John Franklin, emphasised the seriousness of these actions and warned other local businesses to learn from them. Those who made illegal sales are due in court soon, and both businesses have promised to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.

Initiated by the Georgia Department of Revenue due to an anonymous tip, an investigation revealed significant discrepancies in the businesses’ financial records, leading to suspicions of tax evasion or other financial wrongdoing. A comprehensive audit was launched and depending on its results, penalties, fines or possible legal actions might be imposed.

Currently closed, Alto Mountain Grocery is waiting on the results of a thorough investigation by the Baldwin Police Department. The future of the business hanging in the balance, concerned customers and stakeholders await a clear update.

Meanwhile, an obligatory hearing before the Baldwin City Council is set for Friday, April 26th for the two businesses. This hearing will allow for evidence presentation and witness testimonies as preparations are underway.

Although this incident doesn’t pose an immediate public safety threat, it reinforces the importance of strict compliance with state regulations on age-restricted sales. To ensure businesses comply with these rules, random checks will be conducted by local authorities. Not only to avoid penalties, this is crucial in preserving the safety of our younger generation.

Strict policies concerning age-restricted sales and proper training are essential to prevent such instances from reoccuring. This is not only about adhering to the laws, but also about contributing towards the security of the community. The incident serves as a lesson, as safety and security are shared responsibilities.
