Iranian missiles intercepted at Qatar base

by / ⠀News / June 25, 2025

Iran fired multiple ballistic missiles at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday. The base is a key U.S. military facility in the Middle East. Despite the attack, no casualties were reported.

U.S. Patriot missile batteries intercepted most of the incoming missiles. The base had largely been evacuated before the strikes. This was part of precautionary measures ahead of U.S. operations over the weekend.

In a statement, U.S. Central Command confirmed the effectiveness of the joint Patriot batteries. They emphasized that no lives were lost during the missile strike. The Foreign Ministry of Qatar also condemned the Iranian attack.

They reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to its defense capabilities and alliance with the United States. The Iranian missile attack was a response to the U.S.’s recent use of bunker-busting bombs on Iranian nuclear facilities. Iranian officials called their action “a mighty and successful response by the armed forces of Iran to America’s aggression.”

Qatar’s air defenses successfully intercepted the Iranian missiles targeting the base.

The Qatari and U.S.-operated Patriot air defense systems played a crucial role in neutralizing the incoming threat. Qatar’s air defense capabilities are primarily bolstered by American-made systems. These include the Patriot, NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems), Rapier, and Roland missile systems.

The Patriot system is designed to intercept aircraft and ballistic missiles with high precision. It has a range of over 70 miles for aircraft and reduced range for fast-moving missiles.

NASAMS can protect against missiles and uncrewed aerial vehicles. Qatar’s acquisition of additional NASAMS missiles in 2018 further enhanced its air defense arsenal. Qatar is also set to receive the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

This is part of a significant military procurement deal with the U.S. valued at $42 billion. THAAD systems are designed to intercept ballistic missiles during their terminal phase of flight at extended ranges. The recent tensions and missile strike have put U.S. forces in the region on high alert.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, reassured that U.S. troops are prepared to respond to any further Iranian actions. He stated that it would be an extremely poor decision for Iran to escalate the situation further.

Al Udeid Air Base regularly hosts a variety of aircraft. These include B-52 strategic bombers, C-17 Globemaster transports, and B-1 supersonic bombers. Footage from the base during the missile strike showed the dramatic interception efforts of the defense systems in action.

The successful defense against the Iranian missile attack underscores the high stakes and volatile nature of U.S.-Iran relations. Qatar plays a pivotal role in maintaining regional stability through its advanced air defense infrastructure.
