A Canadian mining company has discovered a massive 2,492-carat diamond in Botswana. The stone was found at the Karowe Mine, which is owned by Lucara Diamond Corp. The diamond is believed to be the second-largest ever found.
It is surpassed only by the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan was later cut into smaller stones, some of which are now part of the British Crown Jewels. Lucara used X-ray technology to find the diamond.
The company described the stone as “exceptional” and “high-quality.” It was found intact, which is rare for such a large diamond. William Lamb, the CEO of Lucara, expressed his excitement about the discovery. “We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond,” he said in a statement.
Botswana is the world’s second-largest producer of diamonds. The country has unearthed several large stones in recent years. In 2019, the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond was found at the same mine.
