Trump accuses Harris of stealing tax policy

Former President Donald Trump has accused Vice President Kamala Harris of stealing his idea to eliminate federal taxes on tips. Harris announced the policy during a recent campus rally in Las Vegas. Trump took to social media, writing, “Kamala Harris, whose ‘Honeymoon’ period is ENDING, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy. The difference is, she won’t do it; she just wants it for Political Purposes!” At the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Harris promised to fight for working families, stating, “When I am president, we will continue our fight for the working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.” Harris received support from labor unions, including Local 226, which represents service and hospitality workers in Las Vegas. Her announcement was welcomed by many in these industries. However, the idea of eliminating taxes on tips is not new. In 2012, former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul called it an “outrage” that service workers had to pay taxes on tips.

Trump claims Harris copied policy

He introduced legislation to exempt tips from federal income and payroll taxes. Congressional records also show that former Rep. Phil Crane had previously called for no taxes on tips. Despite this, Trump claimed the idea as his own during a Las Vegas rally in June. He promised hotel workers and others who receive tips that they would be “very happy” if taxes on tips were eliminated. Both Trump and Harris have now expressed commitments to ending taxes on tips, which may become a significant talking point in the upcoming election. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
