Out of 25 dating apps reviewed by Mozilla, 22 received the lowest privacy rating. The study found that 80% of these apps potentially distribute or trade user data. A select few apps like Lex passed the review with favorable ratings.

Apps like Bumble have been criticized for vague privacy clauses that could allow the sale of user detail to advertisers.

Dating apps under fire for lax privacy measures

Other popular platforms such as Hinge, Tinder, Match, and OKCupid have been found to collect accurate user location data. This raises concerns about user privacy and highlights the need for regulatory bodies to enforce stricter data handling protocols.

The misuse of extensive user data by data brokers is a growing concern. An example of this misuse is when a US Catholic organization purchased data from Grindr to monitor its members. This disturbing practice indicates the extent to which the misuse of data is impacting society and underscores the urgent need for protective measures.

Companies like Match Group and Bumble are exploring innovative ways to engage users due to significant reductions in their market cap caused by a lack of user data privacy. This includes a rising interest in features powered by AI, which also raise concerns about potential for more data collection and misuse.

Mozilla’s research is in line with other studies conducted this year that detected critical security and data-sharing issues associated with AI-driven chatbots used in dating apps.
