The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that Pension Credit for couples will increase to £346.60 per week starting in April 2025. This change aims to provide additional financial support to pensioners struggling with the cost of living. Pension Credit is a government benefit designed to help low-income retirees supplement their income.
It consists of two parts: Guarantee Credit, which tops up weekly income to a minimum amount, and Savings Credit, which provides extra payment for those with modest savings or additional income. To be eligible for Pension Credit in 2025, you must have reached State Pension age, and your total income, including pensions, savings, and earnings, must be below £201.05 per week for a single person or £346.60 per week for couples. You must also live in England, Scotland, or Wales.
Applying for Pension Credit can be done up to four months before reaching State Pension age. You can apply online, by phone, or by downloading and completing a form from the GOV.UK website. Claiming Pension Credit can provide financial assistance, health benefits, help with housing and living costs, and even a free TV license for those aged 75 and over.
New Pensions Minister Torsten Bell is urging all low-income pensioners and 1950s-born women to check if they are eligible for an annual income boost worth £4,200 on average.
