Were You There? Under30Experiences: Sólo en Nicaragua

by / ⠀Startup Advice / May 3, 2013

What do you get when you bring 20 entrepreneurs and ambitious young people to picturesque beaches and small villages in Nicaragua?  A once in a lifetime experience bursting with microfinance education, dynamic conversations, critical analysis of economic obstacles and opportunities, and of course, surfing.

The trip was designed to expose young professionals to the world of microfinance loans abroad, encourage collaborations and brainstorming, and forge a community of like-minded individuals who are not satisfied with the status quo and endeavor to bring the world, and their lives, to the next level.

The trip began with a visit to a craft market in Masaya for a trust group meeting.  This group, comprised mostly of women, receives microfinance loans to build and sustain their businesses from Asodenic.  The Under30 crew had the opportunity to listen to the meeting about business practices, leadership, and working together.  It was evident that this was more than a community; it was a family that motivated and supported each other to succeed.

A small group from the Under30 team visited the US Embassy to discuss the obstacles that entrepreneurs in Nicaragua face as well as the opportunities and connections they can make in order to overcome this adversity. The Under30CEO team was joined by successful entrepreneurs from Nicaragua, including Marcella Chamorro from The Perpetual Vacation and Ricardo Teran from Agora Partnerships, a nonprofit that accelerates companies working to create positive change. The conversations were so reflective and engaging that they continued well beyond the Embassy.

It was not all work and intellectual stimulation for these entrepreneurs, they also enjoyed surfing at Playa Maderas, sightseeing in San Juan del Sur, and lounging by the pool at Mango Rosa Travel & Surf Resort.

A highlight of the trip was playing soccer with a local school. The children practiced their English and dazzled the group with their energy and enthusiasm.  Pencils were given to all the participants.

The trip was a catalyst for great discussions and brainstorming sessions about entrepreneurship, technology, and business that continued throughout dinner, into the pool, and on hammocks at Mango Rosa Adventure Travel & Surf Resort.
